Inspired by the true crime tale of James Dean wannabe serial killer Charles Starkweather’s multi-state Midwestern spree with girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate, Malick created this dreamy and disarmingly funny directorial debut. Badlands stars a never-better Martin Sheen as the pigeon-toed Starkweather-esque Kit and Sissy Spacek as his companion, Holly, whose interior monologue is cut-and-pasted from True Confessions-type women’s magazines. With the story of these savage innocents begins one of the great bodies of work in American cinema.
