The Short List: Indie Memphis
“These four short films, which have screened at past Indie Memphis Film Festivals, cover many genres: drama, comedy, documentary, experimental, and combinations thereof. What they have in common is coming at their subjects from the side, rather than head on. With structural innovation and intoxicating images, each film starts obliquely and goes deep.”—Miriam Bale Desperate LA (2021, Jeanetta Rich, 15 min) When Homegirl discovers she's pregnant by the guy who ghosted her, she must face a "new normal" all alone. I’m the One Who’s Singing (2019, Blair McClendon, 17 min) Sonia is a journalist in the midst of writing an emotionally taxing piece. After she receives devasting news she must find the words and means to tell her incarcerated brother. Hot Singles (2021, Laura Jean Hocking, 9 min) Featuring vivid projection imagery, Hot Singles incisively explores the experience of isolation, as a woman seeks refuge from an apocalyptic event. Ten Leaves Dilated (2021, Ebony Blanding and Kate E. Hinshaw, 14 min) Using a peculiar Cabbage Patch Kids ceremony as inspiration, Ten Leaves Dilated traces the origins of the cabbage patch birth myth and modern birth practices to explore shifting ideas around birth in the American South.
