Summer Hours
Three siblings scattered across the globe, played by Juliette Binoche, Jérémie Rénier, and Charles Berling, must come together to decide what to do with their late mother’s estate, which includes a rambling country house in disrepair and the rare objets d’art acquired by her beloved uncle, a notable post-Impressionist painter. From this setup, Assayas untangles issues pertaining to intergenerational misunderstandings and the loss of context in museumification (the film was commissioned by the Musée d’Orsay), while grounding his “theoretical” concerns in emotional truths and an acute sensitivity to the beauty of the French countryside.
