The city of Chicago plays an oppressively glum Gotham in Nolan, Christian Bale, and Gary Oldman’s second Batman outing, a film of Langian architectural oppression that pits Bruce Wayne’s alter ego against Heath Ledger’s anarchic Clown Prince of Crime, with Oldman’s Commissioner Gordon the voice of law-and-order in an increasingly Bedlam-like city. Though Oldman may be known for his chameleonic transformations as an actor and his ability to comfortably occupy the skin of vastly different characters, he would in interviews cite Gordon as the character he’d played who is closest to himself: “A good sense of right and wrong… Family man. Just a regular geezer.”
