The protagonist of Solondz’s Palindromes, 13-year-old Aviva, wants to be a mother more than anything else in the world—and when her own mother (Ellen Barkin) dares to get in the way of her dream, Aviva strikes out on her own, played in her journey across a trigger-happy America of Christian fundamentalists and roving pederasts by a succession of eight actresses of vastly different races, ages, and body types (including Jennifer Jason Leigh), embarking on a voyage that ends, as the title suggests, exactly where it began.
