Somewhere
Your dad doesn’t need to be a movie star with an intimate knowledge of pill-blunted poolside ennui at the Chateau Marmont to feel a twinge of recognition when watching Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, this year’s pick for our annual Father’s Day screening, and one of the most nuanced depictions of a father-daughter relationship in recent memory, starring Stephen Dorff as recently divorced Hollywood hotshot Johnny Marco, his driftless life of pampered numbness interrupted by the unexpected arrival of his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Elle Fanning). A wry, tender, bittersweet film about fatherly fecklessness and ultimate responsibility, more than slightly inspired by its director’s experiences as the child of a famous father.
