Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Oshii’s sequel to his 1995 cyberpunk classic drops us into a derelict neon-lit cityscape of 2032, a time by which it has become difficult to draw definitive distinctions between humans and machines. Two agents from Public Security Section 9—largely cybernetic operative Batou, returning from the first film, and his (mostly) human partner, Togusa—are dispatched to investigate a string of homicides committed by prototype model sex robots, a baffling case that will bring them into contact with white-collar criminals, yakuza soldiers, and a philosophical hacker who has uploaded his consciousness into a human-sized marionette. “[A] plaintive, often stunningly beautiful anime, where sex dolls commit virtual seppuku against a swirl of film noir intrigue, philosophical speculation, eye-popping images and serious science-fiction cool.” —The New York Times
