Mary Stephen Short Film Program

A program of rarely screened short works directed and/or edited by Stephen. Featuring Stephen’s newly restored shorts The Great Canadian Puberty Rite (1974), a nonfiction film following young Canucks participating in the annual rite-of-passage that is travelling across the country during the summertime; her The Memory of Water (2018), about a Hong Kong–born filmmaker’s eventful return to her hometown after decades of living abroad; Rosette’s Rosette sort le soir (1983), a freewheeling Super-8 short starring Rohmer favorites Pascal Greggory and Arielle Dombasle; and Anne-Sophie Rouvillois’s La Proposition (2009), tracking the complications that arise when a young woman agrees to pose nude for a painter.
