In an early ’90s San Francisco, soon to be subsumed by the spread of Silicon Valley, former ’60s radical Bishop (Robert Redford) earns a living hiring out his team of security tech experts, or “sneakers”—including ex-CIA op Sidney Poitier, conspiracy nut Dan Aykroyd, and whiz kid River Phoenix—to infiltrate systems and spot their weak points. All in a day’s work… that is, until government agents use their knowledge of certain jailable offenses in Bishop’s past to blackmail him and his team into taking on a seemingly impossible job whose successful execution will lead to catastrophic results. Robinson’s deft, fleet-footed comic thriller is good old-fashioned star-powered caper picture decked out in new state-of-the-art gadgetry, its whip-smart script courtesy WarGames co-screenwriters Lawrence Lasker and Walter Parkes.
